Whatzit, Flowers Nominated and Plant Questions for Central Florida

Q1: What is the "drop dead" lowest temperature that a hibiscus can tolerate?
A1: It depends on whether you have a tropical or hardy variety ... tropicals can only stand a couple days of light frost without being killed, while hardies grow well to zone 5 without protection. For more information,
see http://trop-hibiscus.com/gindr.html

Q2: How can Skunk Vine (Paederia foetida) be killed? Skunk vine is a Category I Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council weed (Langeland and Craddock Burks, 1998), a listing that groups the plant with the most invasive weed species in Florida.
http://www.invasive.org/biocontrol/27SkunkVine.html
A2: Vines can be hand-pulled or managed with glyphosate or stems can be cut and treated with glyphosate or triclopyr. Retreatment will probably be necessary. Biological controls are being tested. Trade names for products containing glyphosate include Gallup, Landmaster, Pondmaster, Ranger, Roundup, Rodeo, and Touchdown. Tradenames containing triclopyr are: Garlon, Turflon, Access, Redeem, Crossbow, Grazon and ET
Q3: Whatzit??? What is the name of this bromeliad?, In Central Florida, it blooms from late summer to early fall ... the flowers only last a few days, but are very showy.

A favorite of the Sulphur Butte fly

Winter Cassia (Cassia bicapsularis or Senna bicapsularis) A spectacular LARGE woody shrub or small tree in Central Florida. It only blooms this time of year, but well worth the wait. Give it plenty of room ... flowers may cause branches to bow nearly to the ground. It is a favorite of the Sulphur butterfly.

Mexican Sunflower, Bolivian Sunflower, Marigold Tree Tithonia diversifolia
In Central Florida this fall bloomer is very popular. It grows to a height of about 15' and can spread quite wide if the wind or squirrels bend it over. Fragrant flowers are a favorite of birds and butterflies. It should be pruned back to several feet after it blooms because it will freeze nearly to the ground anyway. Care should be used in growing this plant as it can become invasive.
